Unleashing the Steamy Wonders of Hverir along Iceland's Diamond Circle

During our port stop in Akureyri, Iceland we were able to spend some time exploring the captivating Hverir in the Namafjall Geothermal Area. After the site of Godafoss in the morning, our group of 24 friends and family, ranging from little kids to teenagers and adults, were primed for an unforgettable experience in this geothermal wonderland. Namafjall is a high-temperature geothermal area full of active fumaroles and mud pots releasing steam scented with hydrogen sulfide which gives the area its characteristic smell.

Stepping foot onto the Hverir grounds was once again like entering another world--a sensation we experienced often in Iceland. The scene before us was a surreal collage of vibrant colors, bubbling mud pots, and billowing steam rising from the earth's belly, all set against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains. Mineral deposits painted the ground with vibrant hues of ochre, green, and rust. It was a sensory pottpouri of sights, sounds, and yes, even smells!

Ah, the smell! The unmistakable odor of sulfur permeated the air, creating a pungent atmosphere that was both fascinating and humorous. As the adults cautiously inhaled, the kids covered their faces and wrinkled their noses in comical disgust. Their exaggerated reactions, accompanied by a chorus of yelling and giggles, served as a reminder that we were truly experiencing something out of the ordinary.

There are well demarcated areas that are safe to walk on while exploring Hverir, be sure to stay on these as the water and steam reach temperatures of over 200 degrees Fahrenheit. While you'll have to keep an eye on little ones, we felt safe with our kids.
