Lake Mývatn, located in northern Iceland, is a picturesque spot along the Diamond Circle that offers breathtaking views and unique geological formations. Formed over 2000 years ago, the lake is a result of a volcanic eruption in the Mývatn area. We spent some time exploring the lakes, hills and pseudocraters on our day in northern Iceland.
The formation of Lake Mývatn began with a series of volcanic eruptions that occurred around 2300 years ago. The volcanic activity in the area resulted in the creation of several fissures, through which hot lava flowed and spread across the landscape. As the lava encountered the waterlogged ground, it caused intense steam explosions, leading to the formation of numerous pseudocraters. These unique craters add a touch of mystique to the already stunning landscape surrounding Lake Mývatn.
While this stop wasn't as exciting as some of the waterfalls, geysers or steam vents we saw in Iceland, it was not out of the way from other Diamond Circle highlights and our family enjoyed the peaceful beauty of this spot. We even got to spy on some lovely Icelandic horses. I'd highly recommend stopping here if you visit northern Iceland!
