Discovering the Hidden Wonderland of Forest Lagoon near Akureyri, Iceland

Updated: Nov 27, 2023

Today, let's discuss the lesser-known gem of Forest Lagoon ( www.forestlagoon.is), located just outside the captivating town of Akureyri, Iceland. During our port stop in Akureyri, Iceland aboard the beautiful Disney Dream, our crew wrapped up a day of exploration by jumping into the natural splendor of this hidden lagoon. Join me as we uncover the secrets of its unique creation and compare it to the renowned Blue Lagoon.

Our day in Akureyi began with an exhilarating exploration of breathtaking Icelandic sites including the majectic Godafoss waterfall, the steamy wonders of Hverir, the lovely Lake Myvatn and the lava fields of Dimmuborgir. Our wonderful guide was from Saga Travel ( www.sagatravel.is). As the day drew to a close, we stopped at the Forest Lagoon, for some traditional Icelandic-style relaxation. The lagoon is a tranquil haven, offering a unique bathing experience that feels like stepping into a fairytale.

Sky Lagoon's amenities are designed to cater to visitors of all ages, making it a perfect destination for a multi-generational adventure. Families can enjoy the rejuvenating waters together, share laughter and create lasting memories. The lagoon's unique design features secluded areas for relaxation for those seeking a peaceful respite.

The Making of Forrest Lagoon:

The story behind Forrest Lagoon's creation is a fascinating one. It all started during the construction of a nearby tunnel, connecting the town of Akureyri to the remote northern regions of Iceland. Our guide told us that this tunnel has shortened the trip to Akureyri from the surrounding area by hours. As construction workers dug deep into the earth, they accidentally stumbled upon a unknown geothermal spring. Recognizing its potential, they redirected the spring's flow to create the serene lagoon we now know as Forest Lagoon. The lagoon's waters are naturally heated by the abundant geothermal energy, providing visitors with a blissful and eco-friendly experience. It's a testament to Iceland's creativity with its natural resources.

The lagoon owes its name to the surrounding forrest that enhances its natural beauty and serves as a picturesque backdrop, adding to the lagoon's allure and providing a peaceful sanctuary for visitors to unwind in.

Forrest Lagoon vs. Blue Lagoon:

While both lagoons offer a unique geothermal experience, there are notable differences between Forest Lagoon and its more renowned counterpart, the Blue Lagoon near Reykjavik. Unlike the Blue Lagoon, which is heavily commercialized (but also loved by our group), Forest Lagoon retains a sense of untouched tranquility.

Forest Lagoon's smaller size and remote location ensure a more intimate and exclusive experience. We reveled in the serenity of our surroundings while basking in the soothing warmth of the geothermal waters without the crowds and hustle of its more famous counterpart.

Much like Blue Lagoon, visitors need to shower before entering the lagoon. Shampoo, conditioner, bodywash, lockers and towels are provided. Forest lagoon also provides guests with a wrist band for purchase of drinks while bathing.

In additioin to the hot springs at Forest Lagoon, there is a cold plunge pool that our guide and several of the teens in our group braved before going into the warm waters. I tried, but I couldn't get make it past my knees. A sauna is thankfully also available.

Forrest Lagoon stands as a testament to the hidden wonders that await in Iceland, offering an less bustling experience compared to the Blue Lagoon.

So, fellow travelers, the next time you find yourself exploring the captivating town of Akureyri, be sure not to miss the chance to discover the hidden wonderland of Forest Lagoon. As I mentioned, we loved the Blue Lagoon too. If possible, I recommend trying both of these lagoons if time allows.
