If you are fortunate enough to be on a Mediterranean sailing starting or ending in beautiful Barcelona, consider a day trip to the Costa Brava. We hopped on high speed rail from Barcelona to Girona and met Miquel from Tours by Locals who guided us through the Costa Brava. We took a lovely walk along cliffs overlooking the sea and a quaint fishing village in Palamós. Next we explored 3 Medieval villages built to defend against pirates. Pals, Monells and Madremanya didn’t disappoint. We loved exploring these maze like villages untouched by the commercialism and crowds found throughout much of the Mediterranean. Lunch at a family owned restaurant in Monells chatting with Miquel in a picturesque courtyard was delightful. On the way back to the train station Miquel showed us the highlights of Girona, his hometown. We relaxed on the train ride back to Barcelona while dreaming of life in Medieval villages.
