Ah, Ålesund, a gem nestled in the heart of Norway's majestic fjords. Our Northern European cruise aboard the magnificent Disney Dream brought us to this charming port, and what a day it turned out to be! From an exhilarating RIB tour to savoring local delicacies and soaking in breathtaking views, our time in Ålesund was nothing short of magical.
We kicked off our day with an adventure-filled high-speed RIB tour through the awe-inspiring fjords. The adrenaline rush as we zoomed past towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls was indescribable. After donning our wind and water proof suits plus goggles and flotation devices, we enjoyed zipping through crystal-clear waters, framed by jagged peaks, and lovely towns. Our knowledgeable guide from 62 Nord (www.62.no) shared fascinating tales of the region's history and pointed out hidden gems along the way. It was an exhilarating experience that truly immersed us in the beauty of Ålesund's natural landscape. This was a big hit with our group ranging in age from 8-78! 62 Nord, was a short 5-10 minute walk from our ship. Docking right in the heart of downtown makes a port day in Ålesund very convenient and accessible, no need for taxis or buses to get to the good stuff.

After our thrilling escapade, it was time to refuel and indulge in the local cuisine. We found ourselves at Jafs, a charming outdoor waterfront eatery in the heart of Ålesund, savoring a delicious lunch. (www.jafsbrokiosken.no). Jafs is known for their locally caught fish & chips, "probably the best in the world," according to their sign! We loved basking in the warm sunshine and enjoying the picturesque view of the harbor.
With our appetites satiated, we embarked on a scenic hike up Sukkertoppen, a nearby mountain. Although just a short taxi ride away, the panoramic views it offered were simply breathtaking. As we ascended, the cityscape of Ålesund gradually unfolded, revealing a tapestry of colorful Art Nouveau buildings against the backdrop of the fjords. The gentle breeze carried the scent of pine trees, adding to the tranquility of the moment. It was a hike worth every step, rewarding us with unforgettable vistas that will forever be etched in our memories. At the top, there is a scroll where you can record your family's success in reaching the top.
For those seeking equally stunning views without venturing far from the ship, some members of our group opted for the Aksla steps. These 418 steps are conveniently located within walking distance from the town itself, making it a perfect choice for those looking for a less distant but equally rewarding (but more crowded) experience. Ascending the steps, they were met with sweeping vistas of Ålesund's harbor, the archipelago, and the surrounding fjords. It was a captivating sight that showcased the city's unique blend of natural beauty and architectural charm. This is a great alternative to Sukkertoppen if you are short on time. If 418 steps is too much for you, it is easy to grab a taxi to the top. From their, either walk down, or take another taxi. There is no need to pay for an expensive excursion for either Sukkertoppen or the Aksla steps, these are very easy to do on your own.
Because we had such a generous port day in Ålesund, after our hike we were able to shop a bit and then enjoy drinks and ice cream along the harbor before heading back to our ship.
As the sun began to set, we reluctantly bid farewell to Ålesund, but not before soaking in one last moment of its enchantment. We gathered on the upper decks and enjoyed the gorgeous views as we sailed out of the fjords surrounding Ålesund. The day had been a perfect combination of adventure, cultural immersion, and natural splendor. Ålesund had captured our hearts with its picturesque landscapes, friendly locals, and an undeniable sense of tranquility.
